Reimagining Housing, Restoring Dignity

At Sanctuary Village, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, dignified place to call home. Chronic homelessness is a complex challenge, often rooted in trauma, health issues, and systemic barriers. We know there is no one-size-fits-all solution—but there is power in creativity, compassion, and reimagining what's possible. That’s why we see Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing as a powerful, human-centered approach to helping individuals transition out of homelessness and into stability.

What Makes SRO Housing So Meaningful?

SROs provide each person with a private room—a place that is theirs. This sense of ownership and security can be life-changing. While common areas like kitchens or living rooms are shared, the opportunity for solitude and peace in one’s own space is vital for healing. For those who have been navigating life without a stable home, SROs offer a gentle landing. They’re not about jumping straight into self-sufficiency overnight—they’re about honoring the journey back to wholeness, one step at a time.

Breathing New Life into Old Spaces

One of the most promising aspects of the SRO model is the ability to repurpose existing buildings—former hospitals, hotels, assisted living facilities, and similar spaces that are already built to house people. These structures often have private rooms, accessible features, and shared spaces that align beautifully with the SRO concept.

By renovating rather than building from the ground up, we can move more quickly, steward our resources wisely, and bring life back into buildings that would otherwise sit vacant.

More importantly, we can create a warm, welcoming environment where residents can focus on rebuildingrelationshipswithout the pressure or isolation that can sometimes accompany traditional housing.

A Community Approach

At Sanctuary Village, we understand that housing is just the beginning. That’s why our vision includes not just rooms, but wraparound services—support with healthcare, counseling, employment, and community-building. These resources help each resident not only survive but truly thrive. We also know that healing happens in relationship with staff, neighbors, volunteers, and the broader community. That’s why we’re intentional about creating spaces that feel safe, loving, and empowering.

Looking Ahead with Hope

There’s a quiet kind of dignity in having a door to close at the end of the day. A place to breathe, rest, and simply be. We believe that with compassion, creativity, and community collaboration, we can transform unused buildings into havens of hope. SROs aren’t just a housing model—they’re a reflection of what happens when we lead with heart and meet people where they are.
